Sustainable Food Producer of the Year

Winner:  Jane Cooper and the Orkney Boreray Community Farmers

In 2017 RBST recognised the ‘Lost Flock’ of Boreray sheep being farmed in Orkney by Jane Cooper and bought them within the fold on the Boreray Supplementary Register.

Having been designated ‘custodian of the genes’ Jane set out to secure the long term and sustainable future of Orkney Boreray sheep by making their mutton a niche commercial product and crucially by bringing together a community of like-minded (younger!) Orkney farmers and crofters who share the agroecological and sustainable ethos of ‘community’.

Additional production of tanned skins, horn and wool products makes the businesses economically viable.
